Founded in 1967, the Chapel Hill Tennis Club (CHTC) is a premier multi-sport and social club, nestled within a wooded area along Morgan Creek. CHTC is a home away from home for over one thousand year-round and summer members. Established as a member-owned community to promote recreation and community engagement, CHTC offers exceptional facilities that include a comprehensive tennis and pickleball complex with 18 Har-Tru clay and 6 outdoor hard courts, a 4-court indoor tennis facility, an outdoor year-round heated swimming pool, and versatile spaces for social gatherings and fitness activities. 

Beyond its natural and physical assets, CHTC has an array of year-round recreational, competitive, and social programs designed for members of all ages and skill levels. As a private, member-owned nonprofit organization, CHTC is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment that promotes health, wellness, sportsmanship, and strong, lasting community bonds among its diverse membership.

General Manager Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced and results-oriented General Manage r to provide strategic leadership and comprehensive oversight of all club operations at CHTC. Reporting to the 12-member Board of Directors, the ideal candidate is a seasoned professional with a proven track record of managing complex organizations, multi-million dollar budgets, and significant physical assets. 

The successful candidate will be instrumental in fostering a vibrant, inclusive club community and will demonstrate an unwavering commitment to operational excellence, outstanding member satisfaction, a positive staff culture, and sustainable long-term growth.

The General Manager is responsible for achieving excellence in the following core areas of responsibility:

I. Strategic Leadership

Guide the club toward its vision through effective long-term planning, proactive adaptation to changing market dynamics, and astute management of complex situations.

  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement a comprehensive club strategic plan with clear, measurable objectives and actionable strategies. Anticipate evolving member needs and changing market trends, and respond with proactive solutions. 
  • Performance Monitoring: Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) across all club operations, analyzing data to assess progress against strategic goals, identify areas for improvement, and inform data-driven decision-making.
  • Board and Committee Collaboration: Collaborate effectively and transparently with the Board of Directors and various committees to drive improvements, strategic initiatives, and community engagement, providing timely and insightful reports.
  • Crisis Management: Develop, implement, and regularly review comprehensive crisis management plans, ensuring swift and appropriate action to mitigate risks, safeguard members, staff, and assets, and maintain club reputation, with timely and transparent briefings to the Board as necessary.

II. Organizational Management

Foster a high-performing and positive team culture, delegate responsibility appropriately, ensure robust operational systems, and effectively manage all aspects of the club's human resources and internal controls.

  • Performance Management: Implement a comprehensive performance management approach that clarifies expectations and empowers staff. Every team member should be clear about what is expected of them and have access to the resources and support they need to achieve their goals and contribute to the club's success.
  • Personnel Management: Directly manage employees and contractors, including an Assistant General Manager, Racquets Director, Facilities Contractors and Manager, Contracted Bookkeeper, Pool Manager, Swim Team Manager, Member Services Manager and Café Manager. Ensure all managers are effectively managing their direct reports. 
  • Organizational Design: The General Manager will have the flexibility to adapt and optimize this organizational structure, in consultation with and approval from the Board, to best meet the evolving needs and strategic objectives of the club.
  • Culture Building: Champion a positive, respectful, and high-achieving organizational culture that attracts, develops, and retains top talent, promoting accountability, continuous learning, and transparent communication.
  • Policy and Governance: Establish, implement, and consistently enforce comprehensive employee rules, efficient and effective work routines, and internal controls, ensuring strict adherence to standards and full compliance with all regulations.
  • Board of Directors. Establish an effective partnership with the Board of Directors that takes advantage of Directors’ capabilities. Assist in managing Board meetings to be effective, efficient, and strategic.

III. Member Services & Engagement

Be the driving force behind a vibrant, inclusive club community by providing an outstanding member experience, fostering strong relationships, actively engaging members, and seeking and responding to feedback. This includes:

  • Member Satisfaction & Retention: Continuously monitor and enhance the member experience, ensuring a high level of satisfaction and loyalty. This involves building genuine rapport, proactively addressing feedback, and implementing effective strategies for long-term retention.
  • New Member Onboarding : Ensure new members have a seamless onboarding experience that quickly connects them with the club's community and programming. 
  • Program Development: Drive active member participation by developing innovative, high-quality programs. Oversee staffing and continuously evaluate program effectiveness to ensure a diverse and compelling activities that meet a range of members' needs.
  • Membership Growth: Lead strategic marketing efforts and develop compelling initiatives to achieve strong growth and retention.

IV. Financial Stewardship

Demonstrate diligent oversight of all financial operations, ensuring fiscal health, sustainability, and responsible growth through strategic budgeting, accurate and timely reporting, and optimal resource utilization.

  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Develop, manage, and continuously monitor multi-million dollar operating and capital budgets, providing accurate forecasts, detailed variance analyses, and strategic recommendations for revenue optimization and cost efficiency, in close partnership with a bookkeeper, a retained accounting firm and the board treasurer.
  • Financial Reporting & Compliance: Ensure timely, accurate, and transparent financial reporting to stakeholders, overseeing strict compliance with all regulatory requirements, tax obligations, and internal financial controls, and implementing best practices.
  • Resource Optimization: Manage all club resources with a focus on long-term sustainability and financial growth. This includes finding efficiencies where possible, ensuring a strong return on investment, and developing new revenue streams to enhance the club's long-term financial health.
  • Contract Management: Lead efforts to bid, negotiate, and manage all contracts with vendors and service providers, in alignment with board policies, and ensure optimal terms, quality of service, and cost-effectiveness.

V. Facilities Maintenance and Capital Improvements

Ensure the careful planning, execution, and maintenance of all physical assets, providing a premier, safe, and aesthetically pleasing environment that enhances the member experience and supports long-term club value.

  • Facility Maintenance: Oversee the proactive maintenance and continuous enhancement of all physical assets, including courts, buildings, grounds, and pools. This includes ensuring all Har-Tru clay and hard courts are maintained to the highest standards of playability, with meticulous attention paid to daily maintenance and regular reconditioning. Additionally, 
  • Aesthetics: Maintain exceptional cleanliness, sanitation, and aesthetic appeal across all club facilities and grounds. 
  • Capital Project Management: Lead the end-to-end planning, budgeting, and successful execution of all major capital improvement projects, ensuring delivery on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality and functionality.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Safety: Ensure full compliance with all regulations, codes, and permits. Implement robust safety and security measures to maintain an impeccably safe environment.

Salary & Benefits

The anticipated salary range for this position is $110,000 to $150,000. This position is eligible for an initial signing bonus and an annual performance bonus based upon successful attainment of mutually agreed upon targets. 

The benefits package includes health benefits, a Simple IRA plan with a company match and professional development support, including opportunities for continued education and industry certifications.
