Job Description and Duties

The Permanent/Intermittent Jewish Chaplain will be directed by the Program Assistant in Recovery and Mall Services at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

• Consult with hospital Clinical, Administrative, and RMS staff about religious dietaryrequests; review and approval of vendors; providing education
• Conduct quality Jewish religious ceremonies, services and groups
• Provide spiritual counseling, visitation, and teaching to patients unable to attend activities off the unit as scheduled
• Work cooperatively with the other Chaplains to provide spiritual services and groups
• Perform administrative and institutional duties, following policies and procedures necessary to safely provide spiritual services
• Direct the provision of regularly scheduled Jewish services, ceremonies and scheduled groups for study and other spiritual activities
• Effectively communicate with team
• Support the hospital’s Relationship Security Program

Working Conditions

Our facility is a 24 hour, 7 day a week facility.  Position is intermittent, the maximum hours authorized is 1500 a year, you may work less hours during the year.

This position requires you to work within the Secured Treatment Area (STA).

Special Requirements

You MUST submit a copy of your letter of ordination, accreditation; from a recognized California rabbinical body, or certification and endorsement from the Board of Rabbi's of Northern or Southern California.

Candidates that believe they meet the Minimum Qualifications based on a pattern of education from the classification description (specifications) must provide a copy of your unofficial transcripts, that include date degree conferred, if applicable, along with your application (STD. 678) to be considered for this position. Higher degrees cannot be accepted without evidence of the lower degree that leads to it. Please note: foreign transcripts must include a verification for US equivalency through an independent company.

Eligibility and Minimum Qualifications

In order to be considered for this job vacancy, you must satisfy one of the following requirements:

1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification  JEWISH CHAPLAIN EXAM BULLETIN ,

OR

2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250),

OR

3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Either I:

Ordained rabbi duly accredited by, and in good standing with, a recognized California rabbinical body

OR II:

A lay person or a vested Cantor who has demonstrated pastoral competence as certified and endorsed by the Board of Rabbis of Northern California or the Board of Rabbis of Southern California. AND Education: Completion of theological studies for ordination as a rabbi at a recognized Jewish theological school; and equivalent to graduation from college with a minimum of 12 semester units of counseling, psychology, or a related field.
